The dreaded conversation that can so often be a roadblock to a great project. Pricing is important to know. These days the market can be unstable and product is changing so fast it’s hard to keep up. Do you know what the average price to build a composite deck is?

A GOOGLE SEARCH will bring you a myriad of prices and averages. Anywhere from $50.00 to $150.00 per square foot. When considering a price on your deck you should consider a few things.

• Are stairs involved?

• Is there railing involved?

• Natural materials verses greener long lasting products like Aluminum, Composite and PVC?

• Company business models, some companies produce others perfect?

Building within a budget?

• Opt for straight sections of decking and stairs over more complicated curved designs.

• Creative design and decor, like a mix and match color scheme, will add style without increasing costs.

Gathering Bids: What to Ask

When meeting any potential deck builder, it’s important to be clear about how he or she will handle the project.

• Are you a licensed residential builder?

• What would you describe as your specialty?

• Do you have any experience building multi-level decks?

• Can you help design our deck, or will we need architectural plans?

• Do you have a business license and the proper liability insurance?

• Do you handle municipal permitting? HOA approvals?

• What is the lead time for a new deck project?

• Do you have references to share?

Materials

Value VS Quality

There are many companies competing in the composite deck market. Great companies like Trex, have some amazing railing options like Trex Signature rail systems. Trex can boast of some of the best prices on composite deck boards in the industry with their Enhance line coming in around $2.00 a linear foot.

Other companies do not focus on value as much as quality. Timbertech, (one of Divergent’s favorite sources) can boast of the highest quality composite boards in the industry. With the least amount of biological materials (wood and pulp) in their composite recipe that have been able to eliminate bacteria and mold due to moisture and temperature fluctuation. They also cap their composite boards on all four sides. This does mean their composite can be between $6.00 and $10.00 a liner foot. They have also come out with the most sustainable product on the market with their PVC Deck line. It can be pricey coming in between $8.00 and $12.00 per linear foot.
