Do you need a permit to build a deck?

It depends, you will need a permit:

  • if you are changing the footprint of an existing deck.

  • if you are installing railing on a deck that is above 30”.

  • if you are installing posts with footers.

  • if you want a porch roof.

The good news is it is not hard. Most townships only require two-three items and you're good to go. We will explain the steps of applying for and receiving your residential building permit and get your started on your deck project so you can start the summer right.

Zoning application and any requirements. Read this part carefully. It will let you know what your local ordinances are as it pertains to bodies of water and right of ways.

That is all you need in most cases. Some townships offices have more requirements than others. As a homeowner you have the right to act as a builder on your own home repair, remodel, and renovation projects. Be confident and ask a lot of questions.

If you need our help we would love to walk you through the process or take care of the project for you.
